Is sorbitol safe for my dog? Isn't that like xylitol!?

The two get confused because both are sugar alcohols, but dogs respond to them very differently. Xylitol triggers a rapid, oversized insulin release in dogs - three to seven times what ordinary sugar would cause - which can drop blood sugar dangerously within an hour. Sorbitol doesn't do that. It has little to no effect on a dog's blood glucose or insulin levels.
We use a small amount of sorbitol for one reason: to make the powder taste good enough that your dog will actually eat it every day. As with most sugar alcohols, a large quantity can cause loose stool, which is part of why the scoop is sized as it is — stick to the daily amount recommended for your dog's weight.
